“Merlot” is a comfort color for me. When I’m stressed, confused, and need to center, I close my eyes and think of this deep, saturated, translucent red. Merlot, like burgundy and wine all reference a liquid hue that catches light but has the capacity for great depths. Flowers like these orchids, calla lillies, amaranth, tulips, and gladiolus are so velvety and rich that they can appear black. I also grew up hiking amongst the manzanita bush with its deep oxblood branches that twist like blood vessels. Blackberries, currants, and succulents also frame this composition flecked with blood red ants, beetles, and mushrooms.
