Joshua Tree Roadrunner Sunset
Pen and ink, especially sepia India ink, is one of my favorite mediums for sketching. These Joshua Tree scenes are transformed into 18th Century French toiles, but instead of European pastoral scenes in pink or blue, these designs celebrate the landscapes of the southern California desert, in this case Joshua Tree. Other beautiful deserts that have influenced me include Palm Springs, Borrego Springs, Mojave, and Death Valley.
I visit Palm Springs regularly and we always see the fleeting roadrunner which is featured in my sunset-scape “Joshua Tree Roadrunner Sunset.”
Joshua Tree Coyote Moon
Every night we are serenaded by coyote packs that live throughout Fallbrook as they do all over the American southwest. What used to terrify me as a child now comforts me, feeling the visceral presence of native life coming through the dark night. Metaphors!
“Joshua Tree Coyote Moon” features a howling coyote in the foreground with their pack member in the distance under a crescent moon and stars adjacent to a traditional adobe dwelling. Any number of my ancestors could have lived in this hut, harvesting agave, drying ristras of chili peppers.
Joshua Tree Saguaro Owl
The third toile pattern in this collection features a flying owl with lizard in its beak and various cacti and succulents.
Iconography
Pieces of these toiles are redesigned as wall art, dinnerware, and metal garden signs.
